Since its inception in 1975, Greenhorizons Sod Farms has been a family business. Started by Richard Schiedel originally as Compact Sod, then continued by his sons, Ron and Steve Schiedel, farming is in their blood.

They are descendants of some of the earliest Southern Ontario farmers who moved here in the 1800’s. To this day, Greenhorizons continues to farm the same land the Schiedel’s ancestors did. In fact, the original land that the family purchased back in 1802 is on Maple Grove Rd., just a short drive from our current Cambridge farm!

Greenhorizons initially got into the sod industry when the 401 was being constructed in the 1960’s and one of the family’s pastures in Cambridge was harvested for installation along the new highway. That was the start of Compact Sod, creating the path to what we know today as the well-respected Greenhorizons Sod Farms.
