“What turfgrass varieties do you recommend for Ontario golf course fairways?”

Our GHG Dwarf Low-Mow Bluegrass is the standard for Ontario golf course fairways due to superior wear recovery, cold hardiness, and playability. For our Zone 6 climate, we recommend our Kentucky Bluegrass blends selected for traffic tolerance, disease resistance, and rapid recuperation from divots. We can also supply our GHG Tees and Fairways bentgrass in certain situations.

GHG Dwarf Low-Mow Bentgrass
Greenhorizons exclusive blend of Dwarf Low-Mow Bluegrass has been developed as an IPM-friendly alternative to bentgrass on golf course fairways & tees and for close-cut sports fields. This specially selected blend is grown on sandy loam soils and carefully maintained at a height of one inch. The
cultivars selected for GHG Dwarf Low-Mow Bluegrass have the same great characteristics as our Premium Bluegrass, but are better suited to close mowing. Spec Sheet

GHG Tees and Fairways Bentgrass
Greenhorizons exclusive Tees and Fairways Bentgrass blend is a mixture of several cultivars carefully selected from years of experience as excellent multi-purpose varieties. Our Tees and Fairways Bentgrass combination results in a turf that is exceptionally heat, cold, drought and disease resistant. It has broader leaves and can be maintained slightly higher than our Greens Bentgrass. Spec Sheet

“Can you match existing turf varieties for seamless course repairs?”

We can often match existing Kentucky Bluegrass fairway turf through visual assessment and cultivar identification, though perfect matching requires knowing the original sod source and variety specifications. Matching becomes more successful when original variety information is available.

Matching Process:
Information Gathering:
Best Case – Known Variety:
Superintendent has records of original sod variety
We supply same blend if still in production
Nearly perfect match in color, texture, growth habit
Seamless integration with existing turf

Unknown Variety – Visual Assessment:
Superintendent provides photos of existing turf
Site visit to assess color, texture, density, blade width
We select closest match from our available varieties
Good match possible but not guaranteed perfect

Historical Records:
Some courses have installation records from years past
Original contractor or supplier may be identified
We can research if original variety still available
Contact previous supplier for variety information

Matching Factors:
Visual Characteristics:
Color: Dark green, medium green, or lighter shade
Texture: Fine, medium blade width
Density: Thick vs. moderate coverage
Growth habit: Upright vs. prostrate

Performance Traits:
Wear tolerance observation
Recovery rate from divots
Shade performance in tree-lined areas
Seasonal color retention

Cultivar Identification:
Some cultivars have distinctive characteristics
Experienced eye can narrow possibilities
Lab testing possible but expensive for small repairs
Usually not necessary for repair work

Match Quality Expectations:
Excellent Match (90%+ Similar):
Original variety known and available
Same growing conditions (mature, premium grade)
Installation within same season
Virtually indistinguishable after establishment

Good Match (75-90% Similar):
Close variety approximation
Similar blend composition (3-4 cultivars)
Slight color or texture variation possible
Acceptable for most repair applications
Blends together after several months

Acceptable Match (60-75% Similar):
General bluegrass characteristics met
More noticeable difference initially
Gradual blending through maintenance
Functional but not aesthetically perfect
Better than bare soil or damaged areas

Poor Match (<60% Similar):
Significantly different variety or species
Color or texture mismatch obvious
We’d recommend against installation
Suggest alternatives or accept limitations

Challenges to Perfect Matching:
Age Difference:
New sod always more vibrant than established turf
Existing turf may have thinned over years
Color difference due to maturity, not variety
Typically converges after one season

Growing Conditions:
Our sod grown on farm under ideal conditions
Existing turf stressed by traffic, shade, or maintenance
New sod initially appears healthier/greener
Equalizes under golf course maintenance

Seasonal Variation:
Spring installation: New sod bright green, existing turf emerging from dormancy
Summer: Heat stress affects both differently during establishment
Fall: Closest match as both actively growing
Color convergence happens over time

Maintenance Differences:
Repair area may receive extra attention initially
Different irrigation or fertility temporarily
Creates temporary appearance difference
Normalizes when managed uniformly

Our Approach:
Honest Assessment:
We evaluate matching likelihood before committing
Don’t promise perfect match without original variety info
Provide realistic expectations
Offer best available option

Best Effort:
Select closest variety from our inventory
Premium grade for best quality
Coordinate with superintendent on timing
Support successful integration

Communication:
Discuss matching limitations upfront
Explain factors affecting appearance
Timeline for convergence
Ongoing support

Variety Documentation:
For Future Repairs: Superintendents should document sod varieties installed:
Keep records of supplier and blend specifications
Note cultivar names and percentages
Photograph turf at various times
Simplifies future matching efforts

We Provide:
Detailed variety information with every delivery
Cultivar documentation
Encourage record-keeping
Available for future reference

Consultation Available:
Send Us Information:
Photos of existing turf (close-up and wide angle)
Any variety records available
Size of repair area
Timeline and constraints

We’ll Provide:
Matching assessment
Best variety recommendation
Realistic expectations
Support for successful repair

Bottom Line:
Perfect matching requires original variety information. Without it, we provide best approximation based on visual characteristics and superintendent input. Most matches are good-to-excellent, especially for small repairs that blend over time. We’re honest about limitations and committed to best possible results. Contact Us Today

GHG Pure Fine Fescue
Greenhorizons Pure Fine Fescue is an exclusive, low-maintenance blend of Creeping Red, Hard and Chewings Fescues which are heat, drought and shade tolerant. This blend is a fine-textured turf with low fertility requirements and is enhanced with endophytes to resist insect pests.
