We at Greenhorizons were able to apply an innovative solution to a unique challenge on this field.\u00a0The TFC fields were constructed with an engineered sand profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"598\" src=\"https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Engineered-Sand-Profile-1.jpg\" alt=\"Engineered Sand Profile Grass Turf Green Install\" class=\"wp-image-536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Engineered-Sand-Profile-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Engineered-Sand-Profile-1-300x280.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fields with an Engineered Sand Profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Outfitted with 24 inches of engineered sand, the TFC fields had a fantastic foundation. This is the same sand profile of a United States Golf Association (<strong>USGA<\/strong>) caliber green. This is just like the BMO Field in downtown Toronto.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But unlike the <strong>BMO<\/strong> project, \u201cWe didn\u2019t have time to grow the grass on the engineered sand for this job,\u201d said Steve Schiedel, Greenhorizons CEO. \u201cSo, we took rolls (of sod) and washed the native soil off them. This left us with just the roots and grass. We use this process on the golf greens as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soil Compaction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSoil compaction does not occur in an engineered sand profile. Plants need air and water to grow. As soon as the soil becomes compacted, it\u2019s very difficult for grass to grow. Also, with a sand profile, the water will always drain if you get an inch or two of rain,\u201d explained Steve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving the native soil on the sod would have resulted in a layer between the engineered sand profile and the grass&#8217; root system. Therefore, in a very short time, the players would have compacted that layer. As a result, the benefits of an engineered sand profile would be lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Engineered-Sand-Profile.jpg\" alt=\"Engineered Sand Profile Grass Turf Green Install\" class=\"wp-image-537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Engineered-Sand-Profile.jpg 640w, https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Engineered-Sand-Profile-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Removing the Native Soil for the Engineered Sand Profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter we washed the sod, we laid it on the engineered sand profile. We did this on three of the practice fields,\u201d said Steve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the initial work, \u201cWe provided the Greenhorizons <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ProXEstablishment Program (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/greenhorizonssod.com\/uploads\/pdf\/ProXstablishment-Brochure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ProXstablishment Program<\/a><\/strong>. That is a six to eight week process that involves mowing management, top dressing, fertilizing, and more,\u201d said Steve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, we installed the best quality grass in the field by using the most effective methods. In addition, we gave it top-notch after-care to ensure that the field continued to perform as a professional soccer pitch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Promising the Best Care for TFC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Greenhorizons ProXstablishment maintenance program means that we have staff who will keep the grass level, smooth, and firm,\u201d said Steve. This means that the players using the pitch are getting the very best area to play on &#8211; one that would meet FIFA standards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur objective with the TFC Fields project was to provide the highest quality of work in the shortest time possible while meeting the same performance objectives of the field when we were done,\u201d said Steve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWashing the sod is a very unique method for Southern Ontario; we\u2019re leaders in the country at providing this service.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Toronto Football Club (TFC) finds its home at Downsview Park in Toronto.
