One of the hardest things about making a big change in your life is getting other people on board with it. Here at Greenhorizons Sod Farms, we’re all too familiar with this challenge. Renaming our Hamilton Sod location has been a bit of a learning curve.
Greenhorizons’ History: Buying Hamilton Sod
First, a bit of background… In 1975, Richard Schiedel and his sons, Ron and Steve, planted 35 acres of sod on the farm Richard had taken over from his father, Ivan. Two years later, they started harvesting their crop and growing their business. Soon after, they purchased some smaller sod farms to expand operations. They acquired Hamilton Sod in 1989, which had been established in 1951 as one of the province’s first sod farms.
The history and strong reputation of Hamilton Sod were part of why we wanted to add it to the Greenhorizons Group. We know that customer goodwill is an invaluable asset for any business.
Greenhorizons Sod Farms – Hamilton Sod
While we don’t use the old name anymore, some people in the community do. In most cases, it’s because they’re customers who were familiar with the business from way back when. We appreciate the familiarity they have with the brand.
Don’t Be Fooled By Imposters…
The problem is, though, there are some people who are trying to capitalize on our business’ good name. By using tactics like calling their product ‘Fresh Hamilton Sod’, they are trying to piggyback on our reputation of high quality sod and top-notch customer service. We have built this reputation over decades of hard work. In some cases, these copy-cats are giving us a bad name. In the past, we have received countless phone calls from customers of other companies that thought they had ordered sod from us, when, in fact, they had ordered from another company posing as “Hamilton Sod”. We go to great lengths to try and ensure that our loyal customers can find us easily. However, it’s difficult with others trying to use our name.
Our reputation means everything to us. A business thrives or dies on what a person’s experience in dealing with them is like. Their experience is what they’ll share with their family, friends, and on social media. So when some other business tries to use our name to sell you sod that isn’t up to the highest standards, or their staff don’t treat you with impeccable customer service like we do, it really bothers us. Not just because it hurts us, but because you, the customer, deserve the absolute best, and we work every day to make sure you get it.
